Because of the lack of vitamins and healthy food, many of the kids and villagers have terrible skin problems. When our farm is up and running, we hope to provide nutritious food to mitigate the children's skin issues. Now, we can only apply topical creams but the open sores return. This is a clue that a big part of our school design has to incorporate better nutrition and strategies to provide education about the benefits of a varied diet. We suspect that these lesions and sores are caused by the fact that the kids only eat one or two items of food: Ugali (a boiled green) and beans.
We are using our smartphones to share short video reports and lots of pictures.
There are kids everywhere in this tiny village and they show up in huge numbers. They are funny, bright and full of promise. We are ready to build the first structure: The teachers' cottage. There aren't many building materials options in Tanzania that don't cost an arm and a leg. We found this construction sight that makes stone bricks and they are talking our price... :)
